Italy seizes 6 mln euros in counterfeit food in 9 months

Rome, November 13 - Nearly six million euros in
counterfeit food was seized in the first three quarters of 2012
in Italy, inspectors reported Tuesday.
Amid a crackdown on fraud and evasion during the euro
crisis, the agriculture ministry said that 3,000 farms and
companies were inspected, twice as many as the year before.
Police wrote 281 serious violations in the time period and
seized 3,900 tons of agricultural goods.
"Italy's system of checks works well," said Agriculture
Minister Mario Catania. "And for a country with very
high-quality food production, it's fundamental that we avoid
counterfeiting, evading inspections and an array of crimes that
threaten our economy".
