Storms cause 500 million euros in Italian agriculture damage

Rome, November 13 - Damage to the Italian
countryside amid unrelenting rain will cost more than 500
million euros to repair, according to the national agriculture
confederation (CIA).
The figure came in a report calling for an official state
of emergency in the heaviest-hit areas in the center-north of
Italy, especially Tuscany.
In addition to three more deaths reported Tuesday, the
storms and mudslides have wreaked havoc on agriculture,
especially on wine and olive-oil production, where pickers have
been called off the job and heavy machinery has suffered severe
"The damage risks exacerbating conditions still recovering
from a prolonged dry spell this summer and heavy snowfall at the
start of the year," said the report.
The CIA has asked the government to suspend taxes and
mortgage fees in the areas without interest.
