More children being born in Italy to unmarried parents

Rome, November 14 - A growing proportion of
children are being born in Italy to parents who are not married,
the national statistics agency reported Wednesday.
Last year, about 134,000 births were recorded where the
parents were not married, Istat reported.
That's in line with 2010 figures, but stands in sharp
contrast to the decline in the number of children born to
married couples.
As a result, fully 24.5% of births were to unmarried
parents last year, compared with 23.6% in 2010.
Istat also found that almost 7% of births last year were to
mothers who were at least 40 years old, while 10.9% of births
were to women under 25.
For Italian-born mothers, the two age groups were evenly
split at 8% each.
