Sicily police seize first 4-Mec synthetic drug in Italy

Trapani, November 15 – Italian law enforcement
officers seized the first haul of synthetic drugs ever to be
identified in the nation by police as part of a drugs bust on
the southern island of Sicily.
The drug, named 4-Mec or Methylethcathie, is a stimulant
and produces effects similar to cocaine or amphetamines.
It was first discovered in Europe by law enforcement
officers in a similar confiscation in London in 2010.
The drug was identified after experts examined two packages
sent this summer by DHL from Portugal to 60-year-old Giuseppe
Simone, who was later arrested in September.
Simone is a salesmen, originally from the Calatafimi –
Segesta area.
The investigation was overseen by Trapani Chief Prosecutor
Marcello Viola.
Whilst it is the first such haul to have been seized in
Italy, police are currently investigating the possible sale of
4-Mec in the northern Italian Emilia-Romagna region.
