Fifth of Italian households' spending-income inconsistent


Rome, November 20 - Italy's tax agency said Tuesday
that it had calculated that 4.3 million households, roughly 20%
of the total, spend in a way that is inconsistent with their
reported incomes.
Italy's tax authorities stressed, however, that these cases
of inconsistency do not "automatically represent an evasion".
Attilio Befera, the head of the Italian tax agency, Agenzia
delle Entrate, said "around one million" of those households
declared incomes of "close to zero" yet still made major
The Italian authorities have launched a major clampdown on
rampant tax evasion in recent years.
