Agency reports 85% of Italians admit to buying fake goods

Rome, November 21 - National consumer agency Unc
said in a report released Wednesday that 85% of Italians admit
to buying counterfeit products to save money, while 62% say they
cannot always distinguish a fake from an original.
The survey, 'What do you think of counterfeiting?' showed
that the main motivation driving consumers to counterfeit
products is the "need to save money," Unc General Secretary
Massimiliano Dona said.
Statistics also show that the economic crisis has hit the
fake-goods market and that production has dropped, the report
"Counterfeit producers are feeling the ups and downs of
the market as everyone else is," Dona said.
However, Dona said that consumers must "always keep in
mind that counterfeiting is a constant threat to the country's
economy and for consumers".
