Police bust fake farm workers scam in Calabria


Reggio Calabria, November 21 - Police arrested
eight people including a representative of the CGIL labor union
on Wednesday in a suspected social-security scam involving false
farm workers in the southern region of Calabria.
All eight are being probed for taking part in the alleged
fraud which is said to have deprived Italian pensions agency
INPS of 2.5 million euros in contributions.
Police say that workers paid their on-paper employers for
supposed positions on non-existent farms and by doing so
'bought' retirement benefits, welfare, unemployment benefits and
pensions through paying kickbacks.
Probes conducted by police in Reggio Calabria were assisted
by one of the suspects who decided to talk to the investigators.
CGIL representative Rosangela Galluccio allegedly arranged
for the fictitious workers to pay 2,000 euros per person to be
Subsequently, local farm owners Arturo Corso, Joseph Sibio,
Valenzisi Angelo, Salvatore and Vincenzo Pepe' Frisina filed
documents with the local INPS office claiming they had hired
temporary agricultural laborers.
Wednesday's arrests are part of larger investigations that
also include vote buying and electoral corruption, police said.
