Rome, November 21 - Another two MPs defected
Wednesday from the anti-graft Italy of Values (IdV) party,
founded by one-time anti-corruption prosecutor Antonio Di
Pietro.
The two deputies, Giovanni Paladini, who also serves as the
party's regional coordinator for Liguria, and Gaetano Porcino,
an MP from Torino, told ANSA they were resigning from the party
due to "disagreements over policy".
With the departure of Paladini and Porcino, Idv has only 17
representatives left in Italy's lower house of parliament.
On November 14 Paladini said that, despite rumors to the
effect he was preparing to quit the party, he was not planning
on leaving IdV.
At the time he said press reports that he was leaving were
"baseless".
IdV has already lost some key members: on November 8 two
high-ranking party members, defected after falling out with the
party's embattled leader.
Former House whip Massimo Donadi and Senator Nello
Formisano left the party amid corruption accusations against Di
Pietro, which became national news after investigative program
Report explored allegations into the possible misuse
of party funds to build a large property portfolio.
Di Pietro, a former anti-corruption magistrate who founded
his party after spearheading the famous Clean Hands
investigations into political corruption in Italy in the early
1990s, denies any wrongdoing.
In an attempt to distance himself from the party he founded
and leads, Di Pietro said Wednesday that he would remove his
name from the party logo.
"I can't wait to be able to remove my name from the symbol
because it means the party will be standing on its own two
feet," he said.
Di Pietro also announced the imminent start of a new
constituent phase leading to a party congress.
Meanwhile, Donadi said he was going to be presenting a new
political party Thursday morning.
According to rumors, a third IdV MP, a senator, is expected
to announce his resignation from the party later Wednesday.
Paladini and Porcino, according to statements by Paladini,
are going to enter Donadi's new party.
