79% of Italians to stay home at Christmas amid crisis

(ANSA) – Rome, November 23 – The vast majority of Italians
are expected to stay at home between Christmas and Epiphany as
the present economic downturn continues to bite, tourism
representatives said on Friday.
According to a study conducted by the research institute
SWG on behalf of business association Confesercenti and its
tourism wing Assoturismo, 79% of Italians will not be taking a
single day of holiday over the festive period.
Just five percent will be going away for Christmas and nine
percent for New Year, with the remaining population taking some
time off between December 22 and January 6.
The forecast for 2013 is no better according to the survey.
Only 23% of Italians said they did not intend to cut back
on holiday spending, while 46% said they would be taking less
holiday and spending less.
