Rome, November 23 - Rome Prefect Giuseppe Pecoraro
hit back on Friday after the leader of the city's Jewish
community said Thursday's brutal attack on a group of Tottenham
Hotspur fans showed the Italian capital was as dangerous as
conflict-hit Israel.
"If it's possible to attack 50 Tottenham fans in (the
central) Campo de' Fiori square, it means Rome is no less
dangerous than Tel Aviv," said Riccardo Pacifici, the president
of Rome's Jewish Community.
The attack, in which one Tottenham fan was seriously
injured after being stabbed in the leg, has been linked to
anti-Semitisim.
Tottenham followers lay claim to a Jewish identity even
though the London side's fan base is made up of people from
various ethnic and religious backgrounds.
"Rome is not Tel Aviv," said Pecoraro. "I call for respect
for the police from everyone, starting with the Jewish
community.
"I don't accept provocation. Rome is a safe city. I don't
think missiles are raining down from the sky".
