Rome, November 23 - Italian Soccer Federation
President Giancarlo Abete on Friday wrote to the chairman of the
English Football Association David Bernstein to apologise for
Thursday's attack on a group of Tottenham Hotspur fans in Rome.
Anti-Semitism is suspected to have been behind the vicious
attack, in which one fan was seriously hurt after being stabbed
in the leg and suffering injuries to an artery.
Tottenham followers lay claim to a Jewish identity even
though the London side's fan base is made up of people from
various ethnic and religious backgrounds.
Abete described the incident as an "unspeakable attack that
damages the image of our football" adding that it was the result
of "racist, anti-Semitic madness".
Two AS Roma supporters have been arrested for alleged
involvement in the raid, which was a possibly carried out by
extremist fans of more than one Italian club.
The Spurs fans were in Rome for Thursday's Europa League
match against Lazio.
Lazio fans chanted "Juden Tottenham, Juden Tottenham"
during the 0-0 draw.
