Rome, November 26 - Pier Luigi Bersani won fully
1,393,990 votes, or 44.9% of the total in Sunday's Democratic
Party (PD) primary, according to official results released
Monday.
Second place went to Matteo Renzi, 38, who took 1,103,790
votes or 35.5% of the total.
Bersani, PD secretary, won every region of the country
except Umbria, Marche, and Tuscany, where Renzi is best known as
the mayor of Florence.
Since none of the candidates won a clean majority of 50%,
Renzi and Bersani will face each other in a run-off next weekend
to select the centre-left's candidate for the next premier of
Italy.
