Alfano says he will continue to campaign for PdL primaries


Rome, November 27 - Angelino Alfano said Tuesday
that he will continue to campaign to win the primary for the
People of Liberty (PdL) party until he knows for certain what
former party leader Silvio Berlusconi intends to do.
The PdL was thrown into chaos on the weekend when
Berlusconi, former Italian premier, once again changed
directions in his on-again, off-again campaign to run the party
and stand for re-election.
If Berlusconi does decide to make a comeback, the PdL
primaries set for December 16 to select the party's candidate as
premier candidate for next year's national elections will be
Alfano, PdL secretary and heir apparent to Berlusconi, says
he'll continue to campaign unless he hears that his former boss
is definitely returning.
"I am for the unity of our party and I'm working on this
and I am convinced that this is the right track," said Alfano,
who is one of six candidates set to run in the primary.
But if Berlusconi does return, it will launch a "profound
renewal" of the party, he added.
There has been speculation Berlusconi is thinking about
relaunching his old centre-right party, Forza Italia, and
abandoning its successor, the PdL, which he co-founded in 2007.
The PdL, the biggest party in parliament at the moment, has
dropped to third in the opinion polls after a series of
corruption scandals hitting top centre-right politicians in Rome
and Milan.
Berlusconi, meanwhile, was convicted in October of
involvement in an off-shore tax evasion scheme at Mediaset, and
he is on trial for allegedly paying for sex with an underage
