Body of ILVA crane operator found at sea


Taranto, November 30 - The body of a crane operator
at the ILVA steel group's Taranto plant was recovered by divers
Friday after being swept out to sea by a tornado Wednesday.
The body of 29-year-old Francesco Zaccaria was found about
30 metres down, covered by a thick layer of mud, the coast guard
told ANSA.
The tornado, which hurt about 20 people, hit the plant amid
talks to try to keep it open despite a police probe into years
of alleged cancer-causing pollution that led to a wave of
The government is set to issue an emergency decree Friday
to keep some 20,000 workers on the job as an environmental
clean-up proceeds.
Premier Mario Monti said closing the plant, and another
large one in Genoa which depends on its, would take eight
billion euros out of the Italian economy.
The plant at the Puglia port is the second biggest
steelworks in Europe.
