15 arrested in new 'Ndrangheta Liguria probe


Imperia, December 3 - Italian police on Monday
arrested 15 people in a probe into alleged links between the
Calabrian-based 'Ndrangheta mafia and politicians and
businessmen in two cities on the French-Italian border whose
councils were dissolved for mafia infiltration.
A mayor in a town near Imperia in Liguria was placed under
investigation in the fresh probe stemming from the dissolution
of the councils of Bordighera in March 2011 and Ventimiglia in
February 2012.
Police said they had gathered new evidence of 'Ndrangheta's
ability to "influence electoral competitions at the local level
as well as their relations with politics and their economic
'Ndrangheta, Italy's richest mafia thanks to its control of
the European cocaine trade, has spread from its Calabrian base
and has extensive interests in the affluent regions of the
north, police say.
