Rome, December 3 - Franco Fiorito, the former
caucus leader for ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi's People of
Freedom (PdL) party in the Lazio region, must stay in jail amid
an investigation into inappropriate use and embezzlement of
electoral funds, Italy's highest appeals court ruled Monday.
Fiorito was locked up in October after a judge agreed with
prosecutors that there was a risk he could re-offend and when
investigators found he had destroyed evidence.
The case caused the PdL's Renata Polverini to step down as
governor of Lazio, the region around Rome.
Investigators are looking at around six million euros of
financial transactions carried out by Fiorito over the last two
years.
They said 1.38 million euros of this money went into bank
accounts in Fiorito's name via 193 fund transfers.
The Cassation Court on Monday also upheld the seizure of
Fiorito's assets.

was arrested earlier this year amid an investigation into
inappropriate use and embezzlement of electoral funds.

Franco Fiorito deve restare in carcere.
(segue).
