Genoa, December 3 - Police on Monday were carrying
out various arrests, including of a suspected 'Ndrangheta crime
boss, in towns in Italy's northwestern Liguria region, as part
of an investigation into presumed corruption of public
officials.
As part of the roundup underway, two people in the southern
city of Reggio Calabria were also arrested and the homes of
three former public officials in towns on the Ligurian coast
were searched.
Police searched the homes of former local officials,
including that of the former mayor of Ventimiglia, not far from
Italy's Mediterranean border with France.
The three are being investigated for supposed ties to the
Calabrian 'Ndrangheta crime syndicate.
Giuseppe Marciano, a presumed 'Ndrangheta crime syndicate
boss, along with his son Vincenzo and a nephew were among those
arrested.
The local governments of the towns of Ventimiglia and
Bordighera were dissolved in February 2012 and March 2011
respectively following investigations into presumed mafia
infiltration.
