40 people sentenced following 'Ndrangheta op in Lombardy


Milan, December 6 - A Milan magistrate Thursday
sentenced 40 people to prison sentences of between three and 20
years following a police operation against suspected
infiltration by the Calabrian 'Ndrangheta mafia into public
institutions and private businesses in Lombardy.
Three people were acquitted.
On November 8, public prosecutors requested sentences of
between two and 24 years for the 40 people, who were previously
arrested by police as part of a massive sting operation called
Operation Infinity.
Sentencing was expected before Christmas.
Among those sentenced are the head of the ASL public health
authorities in Pavia, a former member of the Carabinieri police,
the presumed head of the 'Ndrangheta's operations in Lombardy
and a local entrepreneur.
As part of the sentencing, some of the accused were ordered
to repay the Lombardy Region 1.2 million euros in damages.
Other accused were ordered to pay the office of the prime
minister, interior minister and defense minister damages each of
500,000 euros.
