Napolitano hopes for 'constructive path' through turmoil

Rome, December 7 - Italian President Giorgio
Napolitano said in a statement on Friday that he was hopeful a
"constructive, correct path" could be pursued at the
"institutional level" after Silvio Berlusconi's centre-right
People of Freedom (PdL) party said it considered Premier Mario
Monti's government to be finished.
The head of state issued the statement after talks with PdL
Secretary Angelino Alfano and with Democratic Party leader Pier
Luigi Bersani, who is set to be the centre left's premier
candidate at the upcoming national elections.
Napolitano said that the parties have pledged to contribute
to an "orderly conclusion" to the current parliamentary term and
have vowed to work to pass the 2013 budget.
If Monti's emergency government of unelected technocrats
falls before the budget for next year is passed, it would be
necessary to form a provisional executive to push it through
