Napolitano in talks over Monti govt turmoil

Rome, December 7 - President Giorgio Napolitano had
talks with the leaders of the two biggest parties in the Italian
parliament on Friday over the turmoil that has engulfed Premier
Mario Monti's government.
Silvio Berlusconi's centre-right People of Freedom (PdL)
party sparked the crisis by pulling its support from Monti's
emergency administration of unelected technocrats.
The head of state met PdL Secretary Angelino Alfano and the
party's whips in the Senate and the House shortly before Alfano
announced in parliament that the PdL considered Monti's
government finished.
He met Democratic Party (PD) leader Pier Luigi Bersani, who
will be the centre left's premier candidate in the upcoming
national elections, and his party's whips later on Friday.
He also had talks with House Speaker Gianfranco Fini and
Senate Speaker Renato Schifani, respectively Italy's third and
second most senior institutional figures.
