Bridge restored on Torcello in Venetian lagoon

Venice, December 11 - A newly restored bridge on an
outlying Venetian island was unveiled to the public on Tuesday.
The Bridge of Santa Maria in Torcello, the only passageway
to the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, is once again open to
foot traffic after an eight-month restoration.
Restorers used carbon-fiber connecting rods to reinforce
the bridge, which dates back to 1511.
Torcello, famous for its Byzantine mosaics and historic
ties to Constantinople, was once mightier than Venice itself,
boasting a 10,000-strong population until a decline that began
in the 12th century.
Today less than two dozen people live there.
