Naples, December 13 - NATO supreme allied
commander Admiral James Stavridis presided over the opening of
the new NATO interforce command base in the southern Italian
region of Campania on Thursday.
The ceremony to mark the inauguration of the base located
in Lago Patria, Naples, was also attended by Italian Defense
Minister Giampaolo di Paola.
The new base is already operational, though there are still
offices waiting to be transferred from the old base in the
Bagnoli neighbourhood located in the eastern periphery of the
city of Naples.
The Nato Command base in Bagnoli had been operational since
1954.
The new JFC Naples base will contain some 2,300 employees
between military and civil workers, made up of some 22 nations.
There is still infrastructure that needs to be built that
has been assigned to the local authorities and the Italian
government to manage.
"Some two years are needed to reach full capacity", Di
Paola said during his speech.
"Both Italy and the local authorities will need to give
their support in order for the objective to be reached".
