Pope accumulates over 2 million Twitter followers in 5 days

Rome, December 17 - A mere five days after his
first tweet, Pope Benedict XVI's feed, @Pontifex, has already
accumulated more than two million followers, the Vatican's radio
station reported Monday.
The Pope tweets in eight languages, Radio Vaticana said.
''The desire of the Holy Father was to be there where men
live and to be near them with words of truth, while adapting to
Twitter's language style and 140 character length,'' said
Claudio Maria Celli, the president of the Pontifical Council for
Social Communications, Monday.
''I believe the Pope wants to be close to the women and men
of today, with that language that today's women and men use,''
Celli said.
Today there are some 140 million users on Twitter, Celli
said, adding that these users are often young, between the ages
of 18 and 34.
''This is the desire, to be where these people are
communicating with each other, and they are not just
communicating data and information but, in part, they
communicate about themselves,'' Celli said.
