Parliament preparing for final vote on ILVA decree

Rome, December 18 - Members of Italy's parliament
are preparing for final votes Tuesday and Wednesday on the
government's "Save Taranto" decree.
The decree, designed to keep the embattled ILVA steel plant
in the southern city of Taranto operational, was approved last
week by a parliamentary commission with only a few amendments.
Government ministers have made the plant's 20,000 jobs a
priority, pitting them against Taranto prosecutors fighting to
close what they consider an environmental and health hazard.
The government's "Save Taranto" decree would keep the plant
operating while it undergoes environmental improvements, despite
the efforts of prosecutors dating back to July.
