Kochi (India), December 21 - Italian marines
Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone arrived in the
courthouse of the southern coastal Indian city of Kollam on
Friday to ask for the return of their passports.
The Indian Supreme Court granted the two marines, who are
on trial in Kollam for the off-shore killing of two fishermen
last February, permission to return home for two weeks over the
holidays.
The marines were accompanied by Italian ambassador Giacomo
Sanfelice and the Italian Consul General of Mumbai Giampaolo
Cutillo.
The Italian delegation was met by a throng of journalists
and cameramen at the courthouse, but received the passports
without incident.
Latorre and Girone "could leave for Rome tonight," a member
of the Italian delegation told ANSA.
An airplane from Italy with Italian officials on board
landed in the Kochi international airport on Friday to escort
the two marines to Italy.
