Pannella suspends hunger strike, but ready to 'resume'

Pistoia, December 26 - Marco Pannella, the
historic leader of Italy's Radical Party said on Wednesday that
he had agreed to stop his 15-day hunger strike but was "ready to
resume if the state does not stop its flagrant criminal,
Fascist, Nazi and totalitarian Communist totalitarian".
"Last night I suspended my thirst-and-hunger strike,"
Pannella told inmates during a three-hour annual holiday visit
to a prison in Pistoia near Florence.
Pannella, 82, started the strike to call for an amnesty to
stop chronic overcrowding in Italy's jails, and for prisoners be
given the right to vote.
Last Wednesday he allowed doctors to give him intravenous
rehydration therapy after the clinic he was staying in said his
was life in danger.
Italian Premier Mario Monti visited Pannella and tried to
persuade him to end the protest after doctors said he risked
kidney failure and cardiovascular problems.
