Minister says India hopes for resolution to marines' case

New Delhi, December 28 - India's foreign minister
says he hopes that a solution can soon be found in the case
involving two Italian marines on trial in the deaths of Indian
"I hope that soon we can arrive at a solution and resolve
this issue that has created tension between our countries,"
Foreign Minister Salman Khurshid said Friday during his annual
year-end meeting with the press.
"We tried to work as much as we can to find a solution to
the problem, but it is obvious that it is first of all, a
Supreme Court matter," he added.
"After that judgment, I am sure that everything will be
back to normal little by little".
Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone have been
released on bail but confined to India after allegedly shooting
and killing two Indian fishermen off the coast of the southern
state of Kerala during an anti-piracy mission in February.
The pair, given leave to return home for Christmas, have
been at the centre of a diplomatic row between the two countries
over who should have jurisdiction in the case.
Meanwhile, the Times of India reported Friday that India
wanted to be generous when it granted the marines permission to
travel home to Italy for Christmas.
