Bari, January 2 - The families of two Italian
marines facing trial in India said Wednesday that the men are
ready to return and hoping for a positive outcome.
"They...will return to India with the hope that in a short
time their story could have a positive solution," Vania Girone,
wife of marine Salvatore Girone, said in a telephone interview
with ANSA.
He and fellow marine Massimiliano Latorre were given
special permission by Indian judges to return to Italy for a
two-week Christmas holiday under the condition they return to
face trial.
In Rome Wednesday, Latorre's family said they were also
feeling "confident in a positive solution" to the case.
Earlier, an Indian news agency suggested the pair were not
coming back to face the courts on accusations that they killed
two Indian fishermen while on anti-pirate patrol.
Instead, according to Indian reports, the pair wanted to
remain to campaign for election in February's national Italian
vote.
An Italian official, who denied that report, also expressed
hope for an Indian Supreme Court decision, "which should happen
in January".
