Monti says Berlusconi call for inquiry odd but 'interesting'


Rome, January 2 - A commission of inquiry into the
fall of Silvio Berlusconi's government 13 months ago is an
"interesting" if odd idea, Premier Mario Monti said Wednesday.
"Berlusconi confuses me on a logical level," Monti added
during an interview on the RAI radio show Radio Anch'io.
"I hope the voters are less confused than me".
As campaigning heats up for next month's election,
Berlusconi pledged Wednesday that if he is re-elected as Italian
premier, he would hold a parliamentary inquiry into the
international "plot" that led to the fall of his government in
November 2011.
Early elections were called for February 24-25 after
Berlusconi's party withdrew its support from Monti's
technocratic government in parliament.
Berlusconi resigned 13 months ago as Italian borrowing
costs hit unsustainable levels, demonstrating that international
financial markets had lost all confidence in the country's
