Cruise ship captain appears at wrongful dismissal hearing

Genoa, January 3 - Francesco Schettino, the captain
at the helm of a ship that sank and killed 32 people one year
ago, appeared at a hearing in Genoa Thursday over the cruise
line's decision to fire him.
The hearing, which was adjourned until January 9, is to
decide the legitimacy of how Italy's Costa Crociere dismissed
Schettino last July.
The cruise company fired him after the January 13
disaster, when his Concordia cruise ship capsized and sank off
the island of Giglio.
Schettino's lawyer argues the dismissal process used by the
company was not legitimate.
Schettino, who is facing a possible indictment for multiple
manslaughter, reportedly did not speak at the hearing and left
the court without comment.
He has previously said that he expected an apology from all
those who called him "captain coward" for abandoning ship.
A decision is expected on January 30.
