Rome, January 3 - AC Milan owner Silvio Berlusconi
on Thursday deflated speculation that the club would try to sign
Ivory Coast forward Didier Drogba from Shanghai Shenhua in the
January transfer window.
"Drogba is 34 and that is out of line (for Milan),"
Berlusconi said on Italian radio.
Italian media have reported that both Milan and Serie A
champions Juventus were targeting the former Chelsea striker,
who signed a two-and-a-half year deal reportedly worth around
$300,000 per week with the Chinese club in June.
The player is said to want to move following reports he is
owed wages after a long-running equity row at the club.
Berlusconi also dismissed rumours Milan could make a bid
for AS Roma's Italy forward Pablo Osvaldo because of his age,
even though he is only 26.
But he said he would like to see another Roma forward,
21-year-old Mattia Destro, at Milan.
Berlusconi conceded that Juventus, who are eight points
clear at the top of Serie A, were too good for anyone to catch
this season.
He added that fans needed to be patient as the squad was in
the process of being rebuilt after the sale of their best
players, Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Brazil defender
Thiago Silva, to Paris St. Germain in the close season and the
departure of veterans such as Gennaro Gattuso, Alessandro Nesta
and Clarence Seedorf.
Milan are seventh in Serie A with 27 points from 18 games
after being thumped 4-2 by Roma in their last game before the
Christmas break, 17 points behind Juve.
"We need two or three years to be a competitive team in
Italy and at the world level," said Berlusconi, whose side will
face Barcelona in the last 16 of the Champions League.
"But we have to start from a team of young players".
He added that Milan were keeping tabs on around 100
promising young players worldwide and he ruled out making a bid
for Napoli's Uruguay forward Edinson Cavani.
"I'm too old to do crazy things in any field, not even for
Cavani," he said.
