Monti blames tax hikes on past 'irresponsibility'

(see related story)
Rome, January 8 - Outgoing Italian Premier Mario
Monti said Tuesday that his emergency technocrat government was
"forced" to raise taxes "because irresponsible people" put Italy
into a financial crisis.
The comments are likely to be interpreted as an attack on
his predecessor Silvio Berlusconi, who was forced to resign as
premier when Italy's debt crisis threatened to spiral out of
control in November 2011.
"Now the country is safe and there is the prospect of a
gradual reduction in taxes," Monti told Mediaset television.
