Trial set in PdL pol graft case

Rome, January 8 - An embezzlement trial for a
former caucus leader of ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi's People of
Freedom (PdL) party has been pushed ahead to mid-February, the
courts announced Tuesday.
Franco Fiorito, former PdL leader in the Lazio regional
assembly, will go to trial on February 14 on charges of
embezzling 1.4 million euros in public funds earmarked for the
council of the region where the Italian capital city of Rome is
In late December, Fiorito was placed under house arrest and
at that time, it was suggested his trial would begin in March.
Similar charges have also been laid against Fiorito's
former chief secretary Bruno Galassi and Pier Luigi Boschi, who
will stand trial at the same time as Fiorito.
Fiorito was arrested on October 2 for allegedly pocketing
over 1.3 million euros in State-subsidized party funds.
Fiorito's arrest came amidst a swirl of political scandals
and criminal charges across the political spectrum but
especially involving the PdL.
He had been held in prison for several weeks after he was
