Composer Dario Marianelli sole Italian Oscar contender


Los Angeles, Janaury 10 - Composer Dario Marianelli
is the sole Italian Oscar candidate this year, the Academy of
Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said Thursday.
The Pisan-born composer is in the running with the
soundtrack to Anna Karenina, directed by Joe Wright and starring
Keira Knightley and Jude Law.
Marianelli, 49, won an Oscar and Golden Globe in 2008 for
his work on Joe Wright's film Atonement.
Marianelli also collaborated with Wright on Pride and
Prejudice (2005), starring Keira Knightley, Matthew Macfadyen
and Brenda Blethyn, and The Soloist (2009), starring Jamie Foxx,
Robert Downey Jr, and Catherine Keener.
Marianelli has worked with a number of award-winning
directors in a range of genres, from thrillers to adventure
fantasy to romantic comedies.
These include Terry Gilliam's The Brothers Grimm (2005),
starring Matt Damon and the late Heath Ledger; Shooting Dogs
(2005), directed by Michael Caton-Jones and starring John Hurt
and Hugh Dancy; V for Vendetta, starring Natalie Portman and
Hugo Weaving; Neil Jordan's The Brave One (2007), starring Jodie
Foster, Alejandro Amenabar's Agora (2009); the 2011 version of
Jane Eyre; and Salmon Fishing In The Yemen, a 2012 release
directed by Lasse Halstrom with Emily Blunt and Ewan McGregor.
Besides writing music for films he has composed chamber
music, vocal and orchestral works, several ballet scores and
incidental music for the theater.
After a year as a postgraduate composer at the Guildhall
School of Music and Drama in Britain, he spent three years at
the National Film and Television School, from which he graduated
in 1997.
