Italy 83rd in economic freedom index, corruption a concern

Rome, January 10 - Italy ranked 83rd in the
Heritage Foundation/Wall Street Journal Index of Economic
Freedom 2013, up from 92nd last year, analysts said Thursday.
Italy scored 60.6 points (above the world average of 59.6
and below the EU average of 68.9) for "progress in labor market
reform, in controlling public spending, and in freedom of
investment, which compensated for a decrease in monetary freedom
and in freedom of economic activity," Index analysts said.
In the EU, where Denmark is the "freest" country with 76.1
points, followed by Ireland (75.7) and Estonia (75.3), Italy is
next to last after Greece (55.4).
In Italy, "the basis of economic freedom remains weak in the
absence of an efficient judicial context," the Index said.
"Corruption, often involving politicians, is a growing concern
and undermines trust in the government."
