Ex-Grandi Motori managers in asbestos death probe in Italy

Trieste, January 15 - Four ex-managers of the
Trieste-based marine and industrial engines manufacturer Grandi
Motori were officially placed under investigation Tuesday over
the death of eight company workers from pleural mesothelioma as
a result of exposure to asbestos between 1971 and 2000.
The suspects - the general director from 1970-1977,
president and CEO from 1977 to 1984, general director and CEO of
Fincantieri (GM division) from 1984 to 1992 and a member of the
Fincantieri board of directors from 1984 to 1994 - face possible
charges of manslaughter and negligent cooperation for allegedly
failing to take measures to isolate or replace the asbestos and
for failing to properly inform workers about and protect them
from the risks.
The eight employees who died from so-called asbestos cancer
worked in various factory departments.
Meanwhile Trieste prosecutors are pursuing separate
investigations into a further six deaths from pleural
mesothelioma involving GM workers, including three recent cases.
