F1: Alonso praises Twitter as privacy-protection tool

One driver Fernando Alonso praised Twitter for helping to
protect his privacy on Thursday, saying the social-media network
enabled him to deflate groundless speculation about his personal
"Since I started using Twitter, I am the one who says what
I am doing," the Spaniard, who has always been reserved about
his private life and uses Twitter a lot, told reporters at
Ferrari's Wrooom media event at the Alpine resort of Madonna di
"Before it could be said that I was spending my holiday with
elephants or that I was having dinner with (US President Barack)
Obama, but now, for example, I can be the one to say that I was
in Italy skiing on New Year's Day before going to Russia and
from there to Brazil to take part in a kart race organised by
(teammate) Felipe (Massa).
"Tweeting means I can be in direct contact with my fans, to
help them discover aspects of my job that they would never get
to know otherwise," added the 31-year-old, who won the 2005 and
2006 world titles with Renault.
"Of course, I can't say everything because in Formula One, a
lot of information has to remain confidential, but I think it is
still a fun and useful tool".
