Italy support for France Mali op must get parliament backing

Rome, January 17 - Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi
said any support Italy gives to French military intervention in
Mali will need to have parliamentary approval in order to take
place, according to a Twitter post Thursday.
The support will be possible ''only if supported by a clear
and wide parliament consensus'', Terzi tweeted.
Terzi had told the Senate Wednesday that Italy was ready to
provide France with logistical support in the African nation.
That was after French President Francois Hollande last week
announced that the French armed forces had started a operation
to help the Mali government combat Islamist rebels.
Terzi said Wednesday that had discussed supporting France's
operation with Premier Mario Monti and Defence Minister
Giampaolo Di Paola.
Di Paola in turn told the Senate earlier this week that the
support Italy could grant is 'through air connections also for
French forces' operating in Mali, and that it would be limited
to logistical and not ''on the ground'' assistance.
