Pope mourns death of Polish Cardinal Glemp

Vatican City, January 24 - Pope Benedict XVI on
Thursday in a condolence telegram Thursday credited Polish
Cardinal Jozef Glemp with leading the Church in Poland during
"significant transformations" during its fight against
Glemp, the head of Poland's influential Catholic Church
from 1981 to 2004, died Wednesday, reportedly from lung cancer,
at 83.
"He was a just man, and that justice was the basis of his
profound love of God and man, which was the light, inspiration
and the power of his difficult ministry at the head of the
Church in an era marked by significant social and political
transformations in Poland and Europe.
Glemp was the primate for most of the pontificate of fellow
Pole John Paul II, who is credited with influencing the eventual
fall of communism in the country.
With his death the number of cardinals dropped to 210.
