Woman shot dead by ex-partner in city of Vercelli

Asti, January 25 - Police in the northwestern city
of Vercelli said on Friday that they are interrogating a
59-year-old man for the murder of 47-year-old Albanian Donika
Xhafa, his ex-partner, shot to death late Thursday evening.
Raffaele Vorraro allegedly met with Xhafa in an attempt to
reconcile their relationship after a three-year separation.
Police say that when Xhafa refused, Vorraro removed a
pistol from his pocket and shot her four times on a small side
street in Vercelli, then fled to his home in nearby Calliano
Vorraro will be transfered to the Vercelli penitentiary on
A study published in December by EURES reported that 70.8%
of women murdered in Italy from 2000 to 2011 were killed by the
partner, an ex-partner or a lover, a number that also remains
largely consistent year by year.
Total murders of women under any circumstance were
concentrated in northern Italy, the report said.
In January an Italian priest in the northwestern Italian
town of Lerici, Father Piero Corsi, sparked a row when he said
women were partly to blame for the violence they face in a
leaflet entitled "Women and femicide - healthy self-criticism.
How often do they provoke?".
