Bad weather jeopardising Italian crops, farmers say

Rome, February 7 - Farmers on Thursday voiced
concern about the effect of the ongoing bad weather on crop
cultivation as heavy rainfall and icy temperatures continued to
grip much of the country.
The Italian Farmers' Confederation (Cia) warned of the
consequences of continued heavy rainfall particularly in clayey
areas where crops risk asphyxiation due to poor drainage.
Freezing temperatures could also interfere with plant
growth, the confederation said.
Snow fell in many parts of Italy on Thursday, including on
the Aeolian Islands north of Sicily and in the upland Barbagia
area in north-central Sardinia.
Here the local authorities were at work to clear the roads
and traffic was reported to be slow but without particular
Mount Vesuvius overlooking the Bay of Naples was also
covered in snow.
