Rome, February 8 - Italy's world champion swimmer
Federica Pellegrini said on Friday that she will move from
Verona to Narbonne in September to train with her French coach
Phillippe Lucas.
The 24-year-old is in the middle of a sort of sabbatical
year after failing at the London Olympics last summer, when she
she could do no better than fifth in the 200m and 400m
freestyle.
It was a massive disappointment for an athlete who is the
double world champion and world record holder in both events and
went to the Games as the reigning Olympic champion in the 200m.
"In September I'll move to Narbonne and there I'll set up
the three years of work for the Rio 2016 Olympics," Pellegrini
told ANSA.
Pellegrini returned to Lucas, the former coach of her
ex-rival Laure Manaudou, after the Olympics.
He also prepared her before the 2011 world championships in
Shanghai, where she retained both the titles she won in Rome in
2009 with world record times.
But they separated after Shanghai as Pellegrini no longer
wanted to live in France to work with Lucas and the coach
refused to move to the swimmer's base in Verona.
Pellegrini has been limiting the amount of competition she
does and the intensity of her training since the London Olympics
as part of her bid to regain freshness and enthusiasm for the
sport.
Her boyfriend Filippo Magnini, the 2005 and 2007 100m
freestyle world champion, will also work under Lucas, but he
said he will not decide until after this year's world
championships whether to move to Narbonne.
