'Melancholy' at Lateran Pact anniversary in Vatican City


Vatican City, February 12 - The anniversary of the
signing of the Lateran Pact at the Vatican on Tuesday took place
amid a mood of "melancholy" following the announcement that Pope
Benedict XVI will step down, the Italian ambassador to the Holy
See said.
"There was a certain melancholy at the heart of this
traditional celebration," said Francesco Maia Greco, pointing
out that a number of people at the event Tuesday will not be
there next year due to a new papacy and changing Italian
Italian President Giogio Napolitano is stepping down this
year, and Premier Mario Monti's future in politics will be
decided after elections later this month.
Both men were at the event celebrating the the 83nd
anniversary of the accord that established the sovereign state
of Vatican City and governs relations between Italy and the Holy
