Rome, February 14 - Police on Thursday morning
arrested entrepreneur Angelo Rizzoli, accusing him of fraudulent
bankruptcy.
Rizzoli, accused of a financial fraud worth some 30 million
euros, was arrested by the capital's tax police.
Following the arrest, companies and real estate assets
worth some seven million euros were also seized.
Stefania Prestigiacomo, a minister in the previous
government of Silvio Berlusconi, pointed to political
motivations behind the action, describing it as a "clockwork
arrest" against a strong, public supporter of Berlusconi just 10
days ahead of national elections.
Pointing out Rizzoli's precarious health conditions,
Prestigiacomo - a member of Berlusconi's People of Freedom (PdL)
party - asked why police had to arrest him, as there was no
flight risk.
She said the arrest was a "barbarous act".
