Rome, February 14 - Medical researchers at Rome's
La Sapienza university announced a pilot test in which
sildenafil, a drug better known with its commercial name Viagra,
is used to help treat heart problems in women with diabetes.
The trials, the first of their kind to be carried out on
women, follow the positive results of trials on men, which were
recently published in the journal Circulation.
After having demonstrated the effects of the drug on the
hearts of men whose cardiovascular functionality was damaged by
diabetes, La Sapienza researchers - in collaboration the
University of Sassari and Italian pharmaceutical company
Menarini's Fondazione Internazionale Menarini research institute
- decided to test the drug's efficacy on women.
The pilot scheme will be carried out with the participation
of 40 diabetic women who have heart problems and are being
treated at La Sapienza.
Results are expected "within the year," said Andrea Lenzi,
the head of La Sapienza's physiopathology department.
Lenzi said the trials seek to "identify differences and
similarities between the genders".
