India gives Italian marines leave to vote

New Delhi, February 22 - The supreme court of India
on Friday granted a request from two Italian marines on
trial for murder there to return to Italy to exercise their
right to vote in general elections Sunday and Monday.
Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone, who were also
allowed back for the Christmas holidays, have been at the
center of an international row since last February for allegedly
shooting Indian fishermen Jelestine Valentine and Ajesh Binki
from aboard the oil tanker Enrica Lexie, mistaking them for
Lawyers for the pair said their clients were "delighted"
they are coming home for the February 24-25 elections, "also
because of the further time they will be able to spend with
their families".
The marines have mislaid their passports and will travel on
special permits, ANSA learned.
For one year the Italian government has been working to get
the trial moved to Italian courts since the events took place
aboard an Italian ship in international waters.
