Brussels, February 28 - European Union President
Herman Van Rompuy on Thursday said he had "full confidence that
Italy would continue to be a stable and strong member of the
European Union and the eurozone" following Italian elections
earlier this week which boosted the standing of parties seen as
hostile to the European project and the single currency.
In a joint press release issued after meeting outgoing
Italian Premier Mario Monti, Van Rompuy and Monti said that
"Structural reforms so far applied in Italy have helped
re-establish markets' confidence and its international
credibility".
If Italy continues along this path, the reforms "will
significantly increase the country's growth prospects," the
leaders said in their joint statement.
Monti met with Van Rompuy following his attendance of the
EU's European Competition Forum.
