Taranto, February 28 - One worker was killed and
another injured on Thursday in an accident at the troubled ILVA
steel plant in the southern Italian port city of Taranto.
Ciro Moccia, 42, was killed after falling from the loading
ramps of a battery of coke ovens while Antonio Liddi sustained
serious injuries.
The two were carrying out maintenance activities in a part
of the plant that is undergoing renovation works and is not in
operation.
Unions called for a 24-hour strike to mourn the worker's
death and complain against a series of accidents that have led
to other deaths.
Marco Bentivoglio, head of Italy's Fim Cisl union said:
"After some years in which there were no more lethal accidents,
the three deaths in recent months are serious and unacceptable".
Mario Ghini, head of the national Uilm union also condemned
the plant's safety record.
"It's unacceptable that workers risk their lives while
carrying out their activities in a working plant," he said.
"It's even more absurd that they lose their lives while working
in a part of a plant which is not operational".
