Florence, March 1 - Florence mayor and ex-primary
candidate for Democratic Party (PD) head Matteo Renzi on Friday
denied headlines claiming that he was ready to lead a broad
coalition government to take Italy out of parliamentary gridlock
brought on by inconclusive election results this week.
On Friday Italy's leading national newspaper Il Corriere
della Sera published headlines claiming Renzi was ready to
become premier over a grand coalition bridging the three major
minority political groups elected to the Italian parliament.
The body of the article, however, quoted Bersani as
slamming such a hypothesis.
"I said in the primaries what I wanted for Italy. I lost.
Now I am being the mayor," Renzi reiterated on the social
network Twitter on Friday.
"We cannot even allow regrets," he concluded.
Renzi's staff confirmed to ANSA that the Twitter comment
denies any notion of his attempting parliamentary leadership
floated in the Italian press.
