Rome, March 1 - Beppe Grillo, the leader of the
anti-establishment 5-Star Movement (M5S) that attracted millions
of votes in Italy's general election, slammed overtures from the
centre left to cooperate in forming an new government as the
stuff of a "cattle market" on Friday.
"There's a cattle market going on. The M5S has been
continuously receiving offers, to (have a member) be speaker of
the House, to head committees, even minister posts... but the
M5S, its elected representatives, its activists and its voters
are not for sale," said Grillo.
"The Democratic Party (PD) has already identified M5S
people for the various offices," said Grillo.
"It is the usual whorish way of doing politics. To put it
into practice though, there have to be people willing to sell
themselves"
Grillo added that PD head and centre-left leader Pier Luigi
Bersani "is out of history and doesn't realize it - when the
abyss of Monte dei Paschi di Siena is opened, perhaps not even
the memory of the PD will remain".
The Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena (MPS) is Italy's third
largest lender and the world's oldest bank.
The troubled bank has long been associated with the Italian
left, and is currently creaking under the weight of failed
derivatives transactions resulting in losses over 720 million
euros and alleged corruption which has involved some of the
bank's top managers.
